Some youth reported that they saw or heard their parents watching pornography, and this seemed to normalize pornography use for them. I'm so sad for these girls. Five participants—two males and three females--mentioned that they or their partners always preferred to watch pornography that featured people of their same race or ethnicity e. I highly recommend this one! The chapter about queer and trans issues was especially galling, given that Orenstein did not talk to a single transgender person, instead satisfied with speaking to one queer girl who thought she was trans and then discovered she wasn't. The picture she presents does not leave one with good feelings about the sexual revolution some fifty or more years after it began. But it's not until much later that Orenstein points out that these numbers and instances aren't necessarily the norm. This book reads so well and quickly since the language is super accessible. At her worst, Orenstein engages in body policing with prettier language than slut-shaming but with a similar end result , misses out on major aspects of current issues like the battle for bodily autonomy that cannot be erased from modern feminist struggles, shames black sexuality and writes from an unquestioned white perspective, and offers what seems like apologies for rapists, who are poor boys just as damaged by porn and sexism as girls are and who do not know how to cope with acts that make them uncomfortable and the 'blurred lines' around consent. If they are assaulted, I want them to have resource from their school administrators, employers, the courts.
